This concert had promised to be a very spiritual and reflective event in the middle of Holy Week. The central work in this concert was Pergolesi’s hauntingly beautiful Stabat Mater performed by the Girl Choristers and the entire evening was a great success.

The Girl Choristers of Wells Cathedral are performingin a very special fund-raising concert in Wells Cathedral on Friday 16 March2007. ‘An Evening with the Sound of Music' promises to be a wonderful event as the Cathedral Girl Choristers re-tell the story from the famous film in a concert that has been arranged to support the Wells Cathedral Girl Chorister Trustappeal.

The music for the evening will be drawn from Rodgers & Hammerstein's timeless score from the original film, including suchclassics as The Sound of Music, Do Re Mi, My Favourite Things, So Long Farewell, Edelweiss & The LonelyGoatherd

The well-known story tells of Maria, a spirited youngwoman who leaves her life in a convent and becomes governess to a family ofunruly children. Maria, with her charm and songs, soon wins over the hearts ofthe children. However when Nazi Germany unites with Austria, Maria is forced toattempt a daring escape with her new family. 

The Girl Choristers will be joined by local sopranoAli Darragh who will sing the part of Maria, and the concert will be directed fromthe piano by Matthew Owens. The concert will be performed in full costume inthe glorious space of Wells Cathedral and tell the famous story in a new andunique way. The Choristers will play the parts of the nuns in the convent whereMaria's story begins and the Von Trapp family children. 

The concert commences at 7.00pm. A bar will beavailable from 6.30pm. There will be Supper after the concert in the CloisterRestaurant. Tickets are £20.00 for Concert and Supper; £9.00 Concert Only, andare available from the Cathedral Shop Box Office 2.00pm - 4.30pm [01749 672773]& Wells Tourist Information Centre.
