"To have the opportunity to sing in the Cathedral is an amazing experience. If the Trust wasn't there, I know that I and many other girls wouldn't have that chance."

Services sung by the Girl Choristers PDF Print E-mail

The girl choristers normally sing evensong on Tuesday evenings in the Cathedral, and so Tuesday is a good day to remember the huge effort that is currently being made to raise sufficient funds to support the future of girl choristers in this cathedral.

In addition, the girls sing at least one of the three Sunday services in Wells Cathedral (Eucharist, Mattins or Evensong) and often sing by themselves at Evensong on Fridays.

The girl choristers sing music from an exciting repertoire that has grown hugely over the years since they first began singing in 1994.

Boys have been singing here since the cathedral was built.  We have only had girl choristers since 1994, but in this short time they have made an immense contribution to the musical and worshipping life of the cathedral – and we want to ensure that this contribution will continue, indefinitely.

With this concern in mind the Cathedral and its school have established a trust with four distinct aims:

  • To provide scholarships for girl choristers;
  • To secure a permanent endowment fund that will provide girl choristers with the same chance to obtain an internationally acclaimed music training as boys;
  • To make sure that no girl is barred from this opportunity on financial grounds;
  • To ensure that girl choristers can continue to exist alongside the boys.
